MUSCAT — A 19-year-old girl has become the sultanate’s first-ever Sudoku champion. Marwa Al Wadhahi took just 12 minutes to complete a very complex puzzle created by former Sudoku world champion, Thomas Snyder, at Oman’s first-ever Sudoku challenge organised by the Black & White magazine.
Marwa, who competed against eight other Sudoku wizards at the final of the first-ever Black & White ‘You Play Sudoku Open to All Competition – 2010’, held at the Oman Auditorium of Al Bustan Palace hotel, was a clear winner as she topped the competition at all stages. The two runners up were Kalpana D’Silva and Madhvi Kumar.
Marwa won some exciting prizes and the event brought the spotlight not only on Sudoku in Oman, but also raised a much-needed awareness on autism in the country, thanks to the presence of the American autistic savant, George Widener. Black & White magazine raised RO5,000 for the cause of autism in the sultanate.
TRAINING
Civil defence personnel in the sultanate will receive training in search and rescue operations under an agreement signed here between the Royal Oman Police (ROP) and Singapore’s Cosem Safety and Security Services Company. The accord was inked by Lt.-Gen. Malick bin Sulaiman Al Maamari, Inspector-general of Police and Customs, with James Tan, Executive Chairman of the Singaporean Civil Defence Pension Fund and former Commander of the Civil Defence
in Singapore.
The training will cover civil search operations and rescue and developing staff capabilities to face local needs and respond to humanitarian missions.
Meanwhile, ROP signed deal with Petroleum Development Oman under which the company will finance training of 150 driving instructors and taxi drivers.
